I play the basses in MOVIO.

My first record was the theme for the movie "River Kwai" with Alec Guiness. Got that in 1960 when I was just 6 yrs old. Then came the 60´s brit-bands and their Swedish equivalents, but we were to poor to buy their records. We listened to radio and happily sang the tunes in made-up, fake english. In the middle of the 60´s there were rumours from the US west-coast; The Doors, Mothers of Invention, Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead. So as an eager thirteen year old kid I went by myself to my first rock-concert in Stockholm in 1967. Frank Zappas Mothers totally blew me away! Even ´though they hated hippies...

In 1967 I once had to choose between Jefferson Airplanes "Surrealistic Pillow" and Grateful Deads "Grateful Dead" in the store. I could only buy one of them and still afford a train ticket to Uppsala. I got both albums and hitched to Uppsala. Never once regretting it. Although I´m influenced by many bass-players, from double-bass playing Stanley Clarke to Jean Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers, none of them equals Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) and Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead, PL&F). I should mention Peter Hook of Joy Division/New Order and Dave Holland, too. They´ve have all pushed the frontiers of expression, bass-wise!

In 1970 I was recruited by Martin and Jonas H to play in their no-name band. I had just started to learn how to play the double-bass (provided by our high-school) and an old Hagstrom Viking electric bass that I amplified through my grandmothers taperecorder. I remember my fingertips bleeding from the awfully torn blisters. Martins then fourteen year old brother Jonas was convinced to drum (which he did with exellence from the start) and we had "Kalla Karen" (The Cold Corps). We played a lot of gigs in the 70`s and I also joined other Uppsala-bands; Kapten Krok (folkmusic), Mossberg Band (rock), Benettssons Bandits(rock) honing my skills as bassplayer.

I´ve always listened to all kinds of music; from Hank Williams to Stockhausen. No problem there. Keep it coming. Today I play with MOVIO and LaL, the organ-trio-offspring of Movio. I guess I could fit in yet another band, too...

I use an assortment of different basses. Even if the "sound" first of all comes from your fingers (secondly depending on your choice of strings), each bass has its personality and must be treated in its proper way. The Rob Allen-built fretless Mouse-bass is totally different from The Thunderbird! My main amplification consists of an Alembic FX-1-preamp, an Alembic SF-2 superfilter and a MarkBass-amplifier coupled to Epifani and Schroeder cabs. Recent addition to my setup is a Thunderfunk amp that I´m really pleased with. I also play cornet & fiddle. These days my fingers blister from playing the doublebass balalaika. Three strings go a long way! Besides playing I do a lot of photography; both as an artist and as a teacher. I´ve had about 40 exhibitions and I´ve published eight books. You can sample my stuff on flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/ankhljufer. So yes, I love The Kristjan Life! Give thanx & praise!
